So despite the fact that my car isn’t what I would have picked out for myself if I’d had options, I really do love it. It’s cute and compact and now that it has a CD player in it, it’s perfectly fine. It drives really well, without all the little problems and issues that cars get with time: you know, squeaky brakes and bad A/C, that kind of thing. It gets great gas mileage and I never had any problems with it until last week when some airhead kid from Wiess hit it in the commuter student parking lot. The damage isn’t real bad, but I’ve only had this car for a month, and now it’s already semi-jacked up. I could almost understand his not seeing me: I was going straight down an aisle, and he was making a left turn into that same aisle, and I guess he wasn’t expecting anyone to be coming that way. Okay, fine, people make mistakes. My issue is the fact that even when I leaned on my horn for like 5 seconds before he hit me, he still didn’t notice. I just don’t get it. My car is bright red; how can people not notice it? I almost got in another accident yesterday, also not my fault, when a van didn’t see me and tried to pull into my lane. What the hell is going on? When I drive like a psycho, people never almost hit me, but when I drive like a normal person I almost get hit twice in one week? This world is so weird.

What makes the whole thing even worse is that I have those stupid daytime running lights on my car, and I can’t even pretend that they have any functional use now. When I got the car and realized that I’d be driving around with my lights on, looking like an asshole, I was so happy just to have a car, I lied to myself and pretended that it would be safer because people would be able to see me more easily. Now I can’t even pretend any more. My question is, who the hell thought up those things? I can just see some dumbass in an American car company somewhere, (yeah that’s right, American. You don’t see the foreign car companies doing dumb shit like that). Anyway, so Mr. Dumbass is sitting as his desk pretending to do work, when he realizes he needs to come up with something big to keep people from firing his ass. So he thinks to himself “what’s the major problem with our cars?” (besides being ugly, unreliable gas guzzlers). Mr. D. thinks for a moment before crowing with victory, startling his secretary who’s trying to find her panties since her husband started getting suspicious the last time she came home without them.

“What’s up?” she asks putting her earrings back on and smoothing down her hair.
“Accidents!” D. proclaims proudly as he fingers the lacy thong in his suit pocket. “People get into accidents! If I could find a way to stop that, people would buy more of our (crappy) cars!”
Giving up the search for her panties, secretary chick comes over to sit on his lap. “Oh that’s so clever!” she purrs.

Six months later after having wasted millions of company dollars doing market research only to discover that the majority of accidents are caused by other’s inattention, Mr. D. and his committee attempt to figure out what exactly would make people more attentive. After dismissing several completely inane ideas, and watching the little silver clicking ball things that all offices seem to have, Mr. D. jumps up excitedly.

“I’ve got it!” He proclaims proudly, waving his arms. “Lights! Whenever your lights are accidentally on during the day, people honk at you to get you to notice! So if we had lights that stayed on all the time…”
“People would notice?” A newbie asks hesitantly, grinning when he’s rewarded by a thump on the back from one of the other overpaid assholes in the room.

And thus a stupid ass idea is born. My question is, if you make lots of cars with lights that stay on all the time, won’t people become desensitized to them, and stop noticing, therefore making the running lights completely ineffective? This concept makes sense to me, but clearly Mr. D. and the assholes, can’t quite grasp it. I absolutely hate stupid people, and it chafes me that so many of them have so much power. To think that one dumbass could do so much damage with one shitty idea just goes to show how messed up this world is.
